Greene County has a population of about 48,800 according to the 2003 estimated census, and approximately 7,000 part-time recreational residents and vacationers.

The population distribution in terms of age and income is similar to other Upstate counties although our population is slightly older with 16% aged 65 or older compared to 13% Upstate. About 12% of the total population lives below the poverty level, which is close to Upstage averages

Tobacco Use

According to a scientific household survey conducted in May 2007 by the Rip Van Winkle Tobacco-Free Coalition, which covers Greene County, an estimated 22% of Greene County adults smoke everyday and another 6% smoke some days. Of these smokers, about 60% of them are contemplating on quitting in the next six months. Nearly 75% of people have banned smoking in their home and about 72% have banned it in their vehicle.

Obesity
According to the New York State Department of Health, as many as 28% of upstate high school students may be obese or overweight and 21% of elementary kids are obese. Based on federal data, as many as 20%-24% of all Greene County residents may be obese and another 40% may be overweight. Employers and health care providers cited adult obesity as one of their major health concerns. The Federal Government regards the reduction of obesity as one of the most important steps we can take to reduce the incidence of preventable illness and disease.
   
Health Insurance Coverage
The rising cost of health insurance was cited by employers as their major health care concern. Respondents in the household survey also cited the high cost of insurance as a major concern. About 14% of Greene County residents do not have any insurance coverage.
